Just a reminder that 7th-12th grade students and their parents are welcome to the student ministries’ Foundations Sunday School class. As a matter of fact, I’d like to encourage parents to come so that you can take some of these important discussions home with you! College students are also welcome and encouraged to attend.
This year we will begin our next segment in our 6 year journey toward having an excellent foundation in the faith delivered once for all to the saints. The last two years have been focused on understanding what’s in Scripture and how best to read Scripture – even the hard parts.
The next two years will focus on Christian history and theology, beginning this Sunday morning – August 29th – at 9:30 AM.
The history of God’s church is the history of God preserving His Truth through His Word despite the stumbling of sinful saints, and despite a sinful world raging against the Church! In the next two years we will walk through history with God’s church, getting to know her stories and the people that belong to the church of the Living God. We will stop along the way to read Scripture with the church. when the church in the fourth century comes to the difficult issue of the nature of Jesus Christ as God’s Son. We will stop to read through and debate the Scriptures with them in our humble upstairs student room. We will be learning theology through the framework of the story of the church that God has sovereignly overseen, and we’ll be learning to read the Bible well when confronted with difficult questions as we stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us.
This year we will begin in the time of the apostles and we’ll attempt to finish the year by looking at the 15th century just before the Reformation (and just before summer!). We’ll be looking at the doctrine of God, the formation of the canon of Scripture, the doctrines of the person and work of Christ, the doctrine of original sin and the nature of man, we’ll begin to look at the Biblical structures and nature of the church, and much more.
Next year we’ll cover the Reformation era through the present day, and we’ll focus on the doctrines of salvation, more on the nature of the church, the doctrine of Scripture, the doctrines of last things, baptism, the Lord’s Supper, and we’ll also look at specifically Baptist and Reformed history and theology.
If it sounds like a lot, don’t worry! We’ll take it one step at a time! I pray that as we read Scripture through the story of God’s history, we’ll be thoroughly equipped to know and live the truth well since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses!
Excellent, Kevin! May the Lord bless your studies, the hearts and minds of the students and superintend many conversations with the lost that He will be seen, savored and shown as great and greatly to be praised!
We exist to equip God’s people to delight in His glory and declare that glory to our neighbors and the nations.
