Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,
This morning I was reading in Exodus 14 about the crossing of the Red Sea by the Israelites as God delivered them from the Egyptian bondage. The Israelites were fleeing Egypt, but when they looked behind them and saw Pharoah and his army, they were afraid and complained that it would have been better for them if they had stayed in Egypt.
Moses told them to not be afraid, but to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord. The Lord did deliver them and destroyed the Egyptians in the sea. The scripture declares that they saw the great work which the Lord had done and believed the Lord. Apparently they believed because they saw the mighty work of God. I wondered what that said about their faith.
I was reminded of Jesus’ words to Thomas after the resurrection. Because Thomas had seen the imprints in Jesus’ body, he believed. Jesus told Thomas, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe”. I wonder what that says about my own faith.
Do I believe and trust God’s word although sometimes I do not see or understand His working in a difficult circumstance? When I am caught in a hard place between the sea and Pharoah, do I stand still and see the salvation of the Lord? Do I trust His word and believe He will deliver when I can’t see the outcome? Am I among the blessed who have not seen and yet believe?
I pray for grace for us all to believe His word when we have not yet seen His deliverance from difficult circumstances. And I am thankful for the deliverance we already know from the bondage of sin. His word can be trusted.
We exist to equip God’s people to delight in His glory and declare that glory to our neighbors and the nations.
