His way is the right way

Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,

In 1 Chronicles 15, David built houses for himself in the city of David and prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it.  The ark had been taken to the house of Obed-Edom following the incident in which the ark was carried on a cart and Uzza touched the ark and was killed by God.

As David prepared to bring the ark to Jerusalem this time, he apparently didn’t consider putting it on a cart and pulling it.  Instead, David first said that no one could carry the ark except the Levites because God had chosen them to carry the ark and to minister to Him forever.  So David assembled the Levites and gave instruction.

He told them to consecrate themselves in preparation for carrying the ark.  He reminded them that because they did not carry it the first time, the Lord God had broken out against them, because they did not seek Him according to the rule.  The result was that the Levites carried the ark of God on their shoulders with the poles, as Moses had commanded according to the word of the Lord.

So they brought the ark up to Jerusalem in the proper manner from the house of Obed-Edom.  As the Levites bore the ark on their shoulders, there was much rejoicing with musical instruments and shouting and dancing.  The writer records that they brought the ark with God’s help and there was no calamity as in the case of Uzza.  Things went well on this trip, including God’s help, because it was done in His way.

David had apparently learned a very important lesson at the cost of one of his faithful men.  David had learned that the way God commands is the right way and to deviate from His way invites His displeasure and discipline.

This begs the questions I have to ask myself.  Have I learned the same lesson David learned?  Have I brought upon myself difficulties and perhaps God’s discipline because I’ve not acted according to God’s way in a particular incident?  Have I searched His word diligently enough to know His way or merely assumed that what seems right to me must be His way?  Once I know His way, do I believe it’s always the right way to go or may I deviate a little to accommodate my own thoughts or desires?  Am I committed to follow His way even at some cost to myself?  Do I really believe that His way is the right way even when circumstances or others point me in a different direction?  In what ways am I now choosing to go my way instead of His way?  May God impress upon me that His way is the right way in all circumstances.
