A Mighty One who will save

Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,

Zephaniah 3 contains sad and fearful words but also happy and joyous words.  God says, “therefore wait for Me for the day when I rise up to seize the prey.  For My decision is to gather nations, to assemble kingdoms, to pour out upon them My indignation, all My burning anger; for in the fire of My jealousy all the earth shall be consumed.”  The Lord is revealing His anger against those who have not followed Him, but have continued in their sin without repentance.  His anger applies to Israel, His chosen people, as well as to other nations.  It also applies to every individual who goes his own way rather than the way of the Lord.  The words speak of judgment deserved.

But in the same chapter, God says, “For at that time I will change the speech of the peoples to a pure speech, that all of them may call upon the name of the LORD and serve Him with one accord.”  And later, “The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by His love; He will exult over you with loud singing.”  These words speak of a joyous time when there is no judgment; just dwelling in relationship with the Lord in forgiveness.

What has made the difference?  The answer is our gracious God.  He is angry with the wicked every day and will not tolerate sin.  Sin is offensive to Him and requires His judgment and punishment.  But, by His grace, He has poured out that punishment we deserved on the Lord Jesus.  By faith in Him, we are forgiven of our sins and come into right relationship.  That is His doing.

John tells us that God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.  He is a Mighty One who will save His people.

God always has a remnant that He preserves and brings to Himself.  Despite sin and waywardness in every individual and nation, God preserves His own.  Because He has preserved us and saved us, we can be assured that He is in our midst and rejoices over us.  May we rejoice that we know this loving and gracious God.  May we look forward to the day we see Him face to face.  May we spread the message to other sinners like us that He is the Mighty One to save.
