Citizens with different minds

Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,

In Philippians 2, Paul described the humility of Christ as He made Himself of no reputation and emptied Himself by taking the form of a servant and becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.  Paul commands that we have the same mind as Christ in imitating Him.

In chapter 3, Paul talks about his own pursuit of imitating Christ as he says he counts all things as rubbish in order to gain Christ.  He talks of pressing on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.  He tells us to think that way or to have the same mind.

Paul invites us to imitate him as he imitates Christ and to think with a different mind, the mind of Christ.

He tells us of many who walk a different way with a different mind and describes their behavior in sad terms.  He sums it up by saying they have set their minds on earthly things.  With all the temptations that surround us and call us daily with attractive devices, how easy it is to have our minds set on things of earth!

But Paul reminds us that we are not citizens of earth but that our citizenship is in heaven.  This world is not our home.  Whereas we were aliens to God and His kingdom, He has transferred our citizenship to His kingdom and we have become aliens to this world.

As a result, we are to have different minds.  Paul says in Romans 12 that we are not to be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds.  Our minds are to be transferred from earthly things to heavenly things where our citizenship lies.

Paul even assures us, in Philippians 3, that Christ will not only transform our minds into His likeness, but will transform our lowly bodies to be conformed to His glorious body.  We will one day be resurrected with new bodies without sin.  What a glorious day that will be!

In the meantime, while aliens on earth, may we not think in earthly ways.  May we have our minds transformed from focus on earthly things to focus on heavenly things, recognizing that we are citizens of His kingdom.  Citizens of His great new kingdom should have new minds in conformity to that kingdom.
