Jealous for His glory

Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,

There is a phrase that is repeated often in the Word of God and in almost every chapter in the book of Ezekiel.  In fact, in chapter 36, the prophet quotes God in recording the phrase three times.  As the Lord speaks to Ezekiel, He tells what He will do by His sovereign grace and power.  He then says, “they shall know that I am the Lord.”

God wants all nations to know that He is the Lord because He is jealous for His glory.  He declares to Ezekiel that He was furious with the nation of Israel because the people had profaned His holy name.  He even punished them with exile for their wickedness and lack of concern for His glory.

He tells Ezekiel that He will do a wonderful thing for His people.   He will bring them back from exile into their own land.  He will sprinkle clean water upon them and cleanse them from their uncleanness.  He will give them a new heart and cause them to walk in His ways.

Twice He tells Ezekiel that He doesn’t do that for their sakes, but for His holy name’s sake.  He is concerned for His glory and wishes His name to be exalted.  When Israel and other nations see what He has done, they will know that He is the Lord.  His name will be exalted.

We receive many benefits as a result of His redeeming grace He has showered upon us.  He has given us new hearts and cleansed us from our iniquities.  That is a matchless blessing and He continues to shower us with blessings daily.

But ultimately, our salvation and all the blessings are not the most important.  His great purpose is to glorify Himself by making us worshipers.  He wants us and all the nations to know that He is the Lord.  He is jealous for His great name and for His glory.

Perhaps today we might consider ways in which we could exalt His name and glorify Him in our thoughts, words, and actions.
