As pastor Bret preaches through the book of Acts there are several themes that are coming out, each of which is worth studying about. One theme that leaped out at me as I started studying Acts several months ago is that of the persecution of the early Church and the resistance to the Kingdom of Christ as it expands. Consequently, I began looking at the Library and finding very little about Persecution or Martyrdom, so at Bret’s urging I began seeking some books along those lines.

I am currently reading Christians in the Crosshairs, Persecution in the Bible and Around the World Today by Gregory C. Cochran (Ph.D. Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Associate Professor of Theology in the School of Christian Ministries at California Baptist University) Wooster, Ohio: Weaver Book Company, 2016 (182pp.) This book is simply Outstanding! He begins with asking Why a book on Persecution is needed and he expounds on 2Tim.3:12 “Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” He cautions us that some believe persecution is only coming in the distant future, others believe it was only in the distant past, some believe it is only in foreign lands, BUT he says, “It is still with us today and will remain until the return of Christ….It may sound strange to speak of Christians in America being persecuted, but- as you will learn through the discussions in this book- persecution is an inseparable part of the Christian faith. (pp.4-5).

The book is organized into three parts. Part 1 defines what persecution is and looks at where in the world persecution is taking place. Part 2 explores the Bible’s teachings on persecution and Part 3 explains the implications of understanding persecution from a biblical and theological perspective.

While I am not through reading this book yet, I can tell you it is solid, interesting, scary, sobering and Encouraging! Give me a few more weeks to finish it up then come check it out!

Brother Dale got us another nice bookshelf for the already full-to-overcrowded Library and I have set up a couple of the shelves to house a section on Church&State/Religious Liberty/Persecution/Martydom. This bookcase is in the corner beside the desk to the right. This section contains books on Church&State issues, court cases, and political issues over religious liberty and some history books As Well As the new section on Martyrdom and Persecution. Here is a Partial Listing of some of the books on Persecution/Martyrdom you can find there:

Foxe’s Book of Martyrs

Martyrdom & Persecution in the Early Church by W.H.C. Frend, 1967 (577pp.)

The Global War on Christians, Dispatches from the Front Lines of Anti-Christian Persecution, by John L. Allen Jr. (Catholic) Image Books, 2015 (308pp.)

Persecuted: The Global Assault on Christians, by Paul Marshall, Lela Gilbert and Nina Shea, Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2013 (404pp.)

Prepare: Living Your Faith in an Increasingly Hostile Culture, by J. Paul Nyquist (President of Moody Bible Institute, with a Foreword by Dr. David Jeremiah) Moody Publishers, 2015 (217pp.)

The Persecution and Genocide of Christians in the Middle East, Prevention, Prohibition, & Prosecution, Edited by Ronald J. Rychlak and Jane F. Adolphe. Angelico Press, 2017 (393pp.) This is a Catholic publication.

You may notice that with only a couple of exceptions, these books are all of very recent publication date. Do you think there may be a significant reason for that?
