The Beautiful Bridegroom

Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,

The word of God has many beautiful pictures of the Lord Jesus Christ.  All of God’s word points us toward Christ; some of the pictures are a little obscure and difficult but others give us a clear vision of our Lord.  Psalm 45 is one of those places that point us directly to Jesus.

The psalm is known as a love song, perhaps a wedding song.  When we talk about a wedding, we usually talk of the beauty of the bride rather than the groom.  But the first half of the psalm is focused on the beauty and majesty of the groom.  He is even exalted as a king.  He is praised as handsome and full of grace and splendor.

Those characteristics might be applied to an ordinary man and perhaps it was written about a man of that day.  However, Christ is clearly seen as the psalm continues.  Verses 6 and 7 say, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.  The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness; you have loved righteousness; you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness.  Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions…”

We know this points to Jesus because the writer of Hebrews quotes those verses in the first chapter along with the rest of the chapter specifically speaking of Christ.  It’s easy to see that Psalm 45 is pointing us to our great King, the Lord Jesus Christ.

The second half of the psalm is directed toward the bride.  She is asked to leave her people and her father’s house and bow to the King.  The bride is made glorious and led to the King. As we consider this wedding song, we are reminded that, as believers in the King, we are a part of the bride of Christ.  One day the King will come for His bride.  At that time, we will be glorified as Paul tells us in Romans 8.  Those whom He justified, those He glorified.  We will see our King and bow before Him.

As we look forward to seeing our King and bowing before Him, we rejoice that He has chosen us as His bride.  Perhaps in preparation for that day, we might bow before the Beautiful Bridegroom today.
