Stirred up to pursue Him

Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,

Jeremiah prophesied that the people of Israel would be carried away into captivity and it happened just as he said.  Because of their disobedience in following their own way and worshiping other gods and failing to pursue their relationship with the true and living God, they were conquered and carried away to Babylon.  But their gracious God was not finished with them.

After many years, the Persians conquered Babylon and Cyrus the king ruled.  Ezra tells us that in the first year of Cyrus, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus so that he made a proclamation to send the Jewish people back to their homeland to build a temple for the Lord.  The Lord stirred up (motivated) the spirit of this pagan king to carry out His plan for His people.  Without the Lord stirring his heart, it’s unlikely this ruler would have made his proclamation.  Again, we see the Lord taking the initiative in accomplishing His purpose for His people.

We begin a new year today and some will be making resolutions to do things differently or better in the coming year.  All kinds of plans will be set forth with good intentions.  Some may succeed but most people would testify that the majority of plans or resolutions will fall by the wayside at some point.  Hopefully, any plans or resolutions made by a believer would include a plan to pursue his or her relationship with our Lord with zeal.

The apostle, Peter, at the end of his life desired that we be stirred up.  He said, “Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder….”  What qualities was he talking about?  He had just said to “make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.”

May our God stir us up in this new year to pursue those qualities as we pursue our walk with Him.  May we be stirred to make our calling and election sure.  May we obey the writer of Hebrews who said, “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works…”  May our Lord stir us up to walk faithfully with Him.
