Thank Him, for He is good

Dear brothers and sister in the Lord,

Tomorrow is the day we’ve set aside as a nation to give thanks for the abundant blessings we enjoy.  Family and friends will be joining together to celebrate and usually to feast.  Hopefully, it will be a time of sweet fellowship for every family.

For those who know God through our Lord Jesus Christ, the holiday holds special meaning.  We recognize that every good and perfect gift comes down from our Father of lights with Whom is no variation or shadow due to change.  Every day is truly a day of thanksgiving as we remember the great salvation He has provided for us through the sacrifice of the Son.  Beyond our salvation, He has blessed us in so many ways and He is to be thanked for each gift.

Each of us could sing David’s song of thanksgiving given to us in 1 Chronicles 16.  David had finally brought back the ark of God into Jerusalem after it had been captured.  He came into the city with singers and musical instruments and dancing.   It was a time of rejoicing and they made offerings to the Lord and David gave food to everyone in Israel.  David prepared a psalm of thanksgiving for those who would lead in worship.

David says, “Oh, give thanks to the LORD; call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples!  Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; tell of all His wondrous works!  Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice!  Seek the LORD and His strength; seek His presence continually!”

David reminds us of the covenant God established with Abraham, the father of the faithful.  We are assured that God is the only god; all the gods of the peoples are only idols.  God is the creator of all things and has honor and majesty and glory and strength.  Therefore, David encourages us to worship Him.

Then David urges us, may we say commands us, to give thanks to the LORD, for He is good!  For His mercy endures forever.

At the end of the psalm, all the people said, “Amen.”

As we gather this season to celebrate with each other, may we agree with David and the people and thank the Lord, for He truly is good.  Amen!

Dale
