Righteous at all times

Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,

In Psalm 106, the author begins with “Praise the LORD!  Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good!  For His steadfast love endures forever.”  It’s an appropriate place to begin as we consider the grace of our Lord showered upon us every day.

The psalmist goes on to say, “Bless are they who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times!”  Certainly that applies to the Lord Who is righteous and acts righteously at all times.  But it definitely does not apply to us.  None of us does righteousness at all times.  Not one of us is good, no not one.  Even at times when we know the righteous thing to do, we turn away and follow after what we want to do, even though it’s an unrighteous path.  Attitudes arise that are not characterized as righteous.  So, we don’t fit in with those the psalmist counts as “blessed” by his definition. Instead, we fall far short.

But by His amazing grace, God has chosen to declare righteous, by their faith, those who He knows are unrighteous.  He can make that declaration based on the giving of Himself, in the person of Jesus Christ, Who was completely righteous at all times.  By being righteous from all eternity, then living a totally righteous life without sin as a human being, and then offering the perfect sacrifice to atone for the sin of those who are unrighteous, He fulfilled all righteousness at all times.

So, despite the fact that we don’t do righteousness at all times, He has declared us to be righteous by His gracious act.  We can rejoice that He sees us as righteous in Christ Jesus.  We can agree with the psalmist at the beginning of the psalm and give thanks and praise the Lord.  His steadfast love for those He has declared righteous endures forever.
