He reveals Himself to us

Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,

In Matthew 16 is the familiar passage where Jesus asks His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”  They gave various answers for what people were saying about His identity.  He asked them who they thought He was.  Peter gave his famous answer, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.  Jesus told Peter he was blessed and told him why.  Jesus said, “Flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father Who is in heaven.”

Jesus was telling Peter that he would not have known the true identity of Jesus unless it had been supernaturally revealed to him by the Father.  That was very similar to what Jesus had said in chapter 11.  He told His disciples that the Father had revealed the hidden spiritual things to them according to His gracious will.  He went on to say that no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.  Again, Jesus was saying that knowing and understanding spiritual truth and God Himself is a matter of revelation from God.

Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 2 that God reveals things to us through the Spirit.  He also noted in Galations 1:16 that God was pleased to reveal the Son to Him.

The reason we need revelation from God is that “the natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.”  The natural person is dead in his trespasses and sins and unable to come to the knowledge of the truth without a work of grace from God.  So, the natural person is without hope unless the Spirit of God by His grace opens a heart and mind to understand the truth that Jesus is the only way for salvation.

In his first letter, John noted that “the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know Him Who is true; and we are in Him Who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ.”  If we know the Christ as our Redeemer/Savior, it is because God has chosen to reveal the One Who is the Truth and give us understanding.  May we rejoice in the revelation of Christ that our God has given us.  May we thank Him that we are able to understand spiritual things.  May we praise Him that we know the Savior.  May we pray He will open the eyes of those with whom we share the gospel to that they will come to worship Him as well.
