His word is not bound-are we?

Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,

No doubt every Christian has great admiration for the apostle Paul.  His dramatic conversion changed his entire life.  Jesus became his greatest treasure and his pursuit of his relationship with Christ was his passion.  Indeed, he counted everything else rubbish compared to knowing Christ.  Setting aside his former pride, he considered himself the chief of sinners.  So strong was his desire to glorify Christ that he committed his life to spreading the good news of salvation to as many as possible.

Part of his ministry to spread the gospel was training other men, like Timothy.  In Paul’s second letter to Timothy, he urges Timothy to fan into flame the gift of God within him.  He reminds Timothy of a number of things to encourage his heart.  There are things Timothy needs to do and other things he is to avoid.

But in chapter 2, Paul takes Timothy back to the basic truth.  He tells Timothy to remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead as preached in his gospel, for which he was suffering, bound in chains.  But although he was bound with physical chains, Paul says, “But the word of God is not bound!”  Because Paul knows that God’s word is not bound, he is willing to endure everything for the sake of the elect that they might obtain salvation that is in Christ with eternal glory.  Paul knows the basic truth is that Christ came into the world to save sinners.

Paul can suffer and endure because he knows that the word of God is not bound.  He declares later in the chapter that God is faithful.  God will bless His word.  He will use His word as the sharp sword to pierce the hardest heart.  He will draw His elect to Himself as the word penetrates and He gives understanding.  He tells Timothy to rightly handle the word of truth assuming that Timothy will be faithful to share the word.

Reading Paul’s words and seeing his passion can be convicting for us.

Do we keep the foremost truth that Christ gave His life as a ransom for many?

Do we truly believe God will save His elect through His word?

Do we believe that the word of God is not bound?

Are we willing to suffer (perhaps only ridicule or disinterest) to share His word?

Are our tongues bound so that we fail to share when we have opportunity?

May we take Paul’s reminders to heart and believe the truths he shares.

May those truths become our passion.
